Biogas has:
The biodigester is always filled with water, then you add waste and food to let off the GAS!
- NO smell
- NO smoke
- NO carbon monoxide, and
- Produces Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen
The biodigester is always filled with water, then you add waste and food to let off the GAS!
FYI: fats make a lot of Biogas!
Fats, grease floats to the top, egg shells settle to the bottom so their not in the filter.
- You would also need to know that if you put paper into the biodigester it would take more maintenance.
If it is a question whether some food scrapes are more preferable than others- it all comes down to what you want to do with your Biogas. If you want a wicked amount of gas- use fats! Think about what is the use, what is the product? But there isn't really anything the biodigester would reject. The only thing you don't want to put into your Biodigester are things that kill bacteria.
Does the tube have a permanent pressure? Yes, you cannot start a Biodigester off of just vegetables you need something like lake much, pond mud, guts of an animal and even manure is great to help make those pH levels neutral.

Sane Solutions
I attended this event in hopes of leaving with more information than I came there with and I must say that each panelist and each guest who asked a question helped me achieve that goal. It was a remarkable and knowledgable night.
Using biogas is really an easy and healthy way of living. If I had the space I would most definitely take advantage of the great advances of having your own biodigester. I believe that the main purpose of natural gas is to build an environment that sustains itself. Also did I mention that you can solve your solutions for hot water using biodigesters as well!? How easy is it, to use food waste to produce natural gas to warm your home and cook your meals And it doesn't cost you a thing! Remember garbage is always with us! Which brings me to yet another very important topic that could be solved with- yup you guessed it! BIODIGESTERS! 😀 That I will talk about about in my next post.

A more in depth video By Dr. T.H. Culhane
I enjoyed this video because as I mentioned in my last post I knew nothing about biodigesters before this class. This video is easy to follow and also gives you adequate information on exactly how the biodigester works!
What is Biogas?
One of the main topics we discussed in Dr. Culhane's Environmental Science honors class is biogas. I knew not even the first thing about biogas or biodigesters until Dr. Culhane introduced it to us. Growing up in an urban neighborhood you kind of miss out on many advantages on green energy. I've always lived in a government owned apartment building, so things like solar panels and biodigesters and other energy saving products were not familiar to me. One of the reason why I chose to take up an Environmental Science course is because one- I've always loved Science and two- I wanted to know how we could save the enviornment. I always knew there was more behind it and more that could be done.
So now, what is Biogas? Biogas in definition typically refers to a mixture of different gases produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. Biogas can be produced from raw materials such as agricultural waste, manure, municipal waste, plant material, sewage, green waste or food waste. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biogas)
The Advantages of Biogas:
– It reduces fuel costs
– No time is spend on firewood collection
– Smoke free kitchen and improved health
– Modern kitchen with instant and high temperatures
– Improved yield in the garden through the use of bio-slurry as high quality organic fertilizer
– Turning year waste into valuable products
– Reducing deforestation
– Reducing the use of fossil fuels

If I knew that you could use DIY material from your local Home Depot to build a small Biodigester I would have definitely incorporated Biogas into my daily life. I have yet to build one on my own, but I do plan to very soon, and I will keep everyone posted on how it turns out. Below I posted a video on how Biogas works!
Quite simple isn't it!?
Who I Am
Well, my name is Wilette Hibbler and I am a new student at Mercy College- I just completed my first semester there. It was always my dream to attend Mercy College to obtain my bachelors degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. Before Mercy college I completed two years at ASA College where I obtained my Associates degree in Medical Assisting. Although there have been a lot of bumps in my college career path I was offered the prestige opportunity to be apart of the Honors program at Mercy College. For my honors course I chose to pick up Environmental Science but what I didn't know was that I was going to have such an outstanding professor by the name of Dr. T.H. Culhane. My first day meeting Prof. Culhane I found that he was an emerging national geographic explorer, so already I knew that I was going to acquire a great deal of knowledge from being in his class. When you hear Environmental Science the first thing that probably comes to your head is the science of the environment, but in a 3 hour class with Dr. Culhane I found my self learning everything from religion to how the educational system has stolen our creativity as free thinkers to actual environmental Science. In this course we were encouraged to think freely and to learn in a way that many of us are not so use to. Being in that class I felt like I was being educated and not just taught. In High School I feel like I was striped of my creativity because we were being taught to learn the way the system wanted us to learn, and I feel like this is a large reason why many things did not stick with me. They expect everyone to learn the same way when not everyone is the same. So now when I was encouraged and given the opportunity to to do things in a way I feel better suites me- I was stuck. I didn't blame myself because for so many years the wrong way was right, so you forget how to think freely, you forget that learning can be fun. So, what I am trying to say is that Dr. Culhane has made me a believer again. I left his class feeling more well rounded and confident than I have felt in years.

In this picture Prof. Culhane is showing us how to save Biogas in an inner-tube, and we also had potatoes that was cooked using Biogas.. mmm good!
